Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology

• In charge of the Ageing program and responsible for the smooth running of this program.
• Responsible for the short and medium-term planning and co-ordination of research projects within this program, including the optimal utilization of personnel assigned to the program.
• Control over personnel within the program and responsible for the day to day administration of the program (leave, S&T, overtime, requisitions, etc.
• Responsible for the compilation of the annual budget of the program and control over it.
• Responsible for the overall control of equipment and consumables of the program.
• Assist with responding to inquiries from internal staff and external clients and will provide support for related technical transfer activities.
• The line function is to plan and co-ordinate research activities within the ageing program in the short and medium term, as well as to conduct research on Namibia’s commercially important stocks.
• Overseer the collection of and organization of biological samples of hake and orange roughy (such as otoliths, other tissues etc.).
• Participate in commercial fishing surveys. Make standardized observations such as species identification, length, weight, behavior, growth and reproductive condition.
• Perform precision ageing of fish in a laboratory setting from prepared samples and structures. Record age and growth data in the appropriate format.
• Overseer the data management of fish age data and ensuring that appropriate laboratory equipment such as microscopes, computers, cameras etc. are in working order.
• Device and maintain strategies for sample storage, naming convention, and processing.
• Analyzing biological age data (catch-at-length, maturity-at-age/length, weight-at-age/length, catch-at-age.
• Updating the biological parameters in the reports with the most recent data available from surveys and port samples including those for weight at age parameters (a and b), age length keys; catch at age tables, maturity at age and maturity at length data and growth parameters ( Linfinity, K and t0).
• Record and maintain observational data from various fisheries monitoring and assessment projects.
• Attendance, preparation and presentation of research findings at research meetings, seminars, symposia, etc.
• Revision of existing projects and drafting of new and future research projects, in consultation with senior research personnel
• Participation in projects relating to ageing of commercially important resources within other programs, sections or subdivisions, as well as other research organizations within the Republic of Namibia.
• Participation in stock assessment discussions, working group meetings and other similar fora, relating to commercially important resources, as well as other resources.
• Supervision and the in-house training of other staff members assisting with the program ageing (where applicable).

• Conduct sea duties, normally spending about 60 days per annum at sea.
• Take the overall responsibility for the compilation of the quarterly and annual reports for the program.
• In the absence of the Subdivision Head, the Program Head may be requested to take responsibility for the management of the subdivision. The duty sheet/job description of the Subdivision Head shall then also form part of her job-description.
• Assistance to other programs and any other tasks of similar nature as instructed by the supervisor.
• Assist and liaise with researchers within neighboring countries, as well as globally, including those involved in NANSEN, SEAFO and BCC projects
