Activities

Research activities are mainly addressed to the study of the environmental microbial communities. Particular attention is paid to the microbial ecology (diversity and function) and biogeochemistry in several marine environments in a changing climate; relationships between chemical contamination (e.g. heavy metals, petroleum, plastics) and microbial biodiversity in polar areas; Microbial colonization; Metabolic capacity, antibiotic resistance and biotechnological potential of microorganisms; development of new technologies for sampling activities in polar areas; search for novel extreme systems in polar regions, which may be terrestrial analogues of planets and moons in our solar system.
