As a PhD candidate in Marine Sciences at the University of Lagos, leading a 24-month biodiversity and environmental monitoring programme across 11 stations from Tincan Island Port to the Atlantic Ocean. My work examines marine ecological dynamics through seasonal and spatial analysis of zooplankton communities, using classical taxonomy to assess ecosystem structure and function. In parallel, I investigate pollution impacts by measuring environmental parameters and emerging contaminants, including microplastics, to understand stressors on coastal biodiversity. Integrating Environmental DNA (eDNA)into this framework will enable detection of rare, cryptic, and early-life-stage species, providing a richer biodiversity baseline and improving the precision of ecosystem health assessments in our tropical industrial coastal system.
