Activities
J. Adam Frederick serves as the Assistant Director for Education at Maryland Sea Grant College (MDSG). In his 29th year with MDSG, he serves as the Assistant Director for Education and is a collaborator with the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) in the Baltimore, MD, Towson University, and Georgetown University. With colleagues at MDSG, Mr. Frederick develops interactive lessons for the MDSG website and is the co-editor of educational materials on the web including 5e instructional strategies and interactive lessons. Signature education programs include a variety of teacher professional learning programs that focus on enhancing project-based learning as a model for teaching science content. An exemplary program for more than 25 years is the Aquaculture in Action program that places aquaculture systems into classrooms as tool for teaching science and modeling project-based learning. He has worked on several international projects with collaborators in Sweden, Germany, and Spain, most notably the VIRTUE Project that engages teachers and students in monitoring local marine biodiversity and sharing data within a network of partners and schools. More recently the biodiversity monitoring has shifted to include investigations in isolating and observing microplastics. In 2024, Mr. Frederick was recently appointed by Gov. Wes Moore to serve on the Outdoor Learning Partnership Board representing the University System of Maryland.

Publications include articles in journals, co-authored books and book chapters (NSTA Science Teacher, Science Activities, Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, NABT American Biology Teacher, Heliyon, and modeling project-based learning in marine sciences, Springer Press. He received his B.S. in Biology/Education from Slippery Rock University, PA and an M.S. in Environmental Biology from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. Prior to his work at MDSG, Mr. Frederick taught biology, chemistry, and environmental science at Walkersville High School in Frederick County Public Schools, Maryland. In his 39 years of education experience, he has been awarded the Tandy Technology Scholars Teaching Award, the Non-Traditional Teaching Award from the Mid-Atlantic Marine Education Association, and the James Centorino Award from the National Marine Educators Association. Mr. Frederick has served as the President of the Sea Grant Education Network, the Mid-Atlantic Marine Education Association, and the President of the National Marine Educators Association.
