Activities
I currently lead a business practice at a private company in Australia. In this role, I undertake research within industry. Our practice has three main pillars, all focused on the theme of ocean observations. Our first pillar is developing international and Australian capability for adopting uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) for scientific monitoring. This is the USVs for GOOS emerging network, led by the Observing Air-Sea Interaction Strategy (OASIS - airseaobs.org). We are platform agnostic, have strong relationships with USV manufacturers and end-users alike, and have demonstrated technical skills in USV operations. With a mix of research and commercial expertise, we are able to broker relationships, products and projects for scientific data collection. Our second pillar revolves around the collection of industry-relevant oceanographic data in very remote parts of northern Australia, which is conically under sampled for a range of reasons. This pillar is focused on piggybacking on the fisheries industry to collect ocean temperature profiles, and determining the use of the data for industry, national research and operational agencies, and local indigenous communities, who own and manage the majority of the Northern Territory's coastline. We have strong collaborative values and relationships across multiple Indigenous groups and the local university (Charles Darwin University), fostering trusted and appropriate research outcomes for Northern Territorians and industry. The third pillar is focused on Darwin Harbour as an un-researched harbour that is undergoing rapid development. We collect oceanographic data in Darwin Harbour, and advise local industry and government agencies on the likely significant impact of development activities.
