Activities
My work focuses on applying marine remote sensing and geospatial analysis techniques to support sustainable management and conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems, with specific relevance to biological oceanography and fisheries. My activities are centered around the development, integration, and deployment of Earth Observation (EO) tools for monitoring oceanographic parameters and human activities in the marine environment.
1. Vessel Traffic Analysis for Maritime Domain Awareness and IUU Monitoring
I utilize AIS (Automatic Identification System) and VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) data, in combination with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery, to detect and monitor vessel activities within Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). This includes tracking fishing effort, identifying unauthorized transshipment, and detecting dark targets (non-AIS vessels).
2. Python Programming for EO Data Processing and Workflow Automation
I develop customized Python scripts and workflows to automate the preprocessing and analysis of large EO datasets. This includes atmospheric correction, SAR vessel detection routines, and integration of EO products with in-situ and ancillary datasets.
3. Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement
As part of regional projects and collaborations, I conduct training workshops and webinars to build technical capacity among fisheries officers, marine scientists, and policymakers in West Africa. I provide hands-on training in the use of EO tools and platforms for ocean observation, vessel tracking, and ecosystem monitoring.
