Current responsibilities
All aspects of at-sea sampling, including participation in and co-ordination of boat runs for re-stocking and maintenance of representative sampling stations on different farms, with due care to prevent contamination.
Implementation of sample traceability system and record-keeping.
Appointment and management of couriers to the appropriate accredited laboratories.
Monitoring the presence of toxic phytoplankton in daily seawater samples in Saldanha Bay as an early warning system, and notifying farms of results.
Monitoring phytoplankton for outlying abalone farms on the West Coast.
Monitoring phytoplankton for the Katse Fish farms in Lesotho.
Monitoring effluent sampling for West Coast abalone farms.
Monitoring on-farm microbial activity for all Saldanha Bay farms.
Monitoring microbial activity for wet storage/holding tanks for oyster factories.
Monitoring heavy metal and other anthropogenic contaminant concentrations in oyster, mussel and abalone flesh.
Giving input into reopening procedures for processed oyster and mussel (and abalone) products.
Structuring joint sampling to facilitate and expedite the safe reopening of farms after closures, mitigating production-related impacts on industry without compromising food safety standards.
Ensuring that sample collection complies with the National Residue Program (drug residues) of the NRCS.
Liaising with DFFE about monitoring procedures during intensive sampling/closing/reopening of farms.
Working closely with industry, DFFE and the NRCS to assist in updating action plans for microbiological and biotoxin monitoring in Saldanha Bay, to achieve optimal sampling procedures to reopen farms.
Data capturing: microscopic enumeration of phytoplankton diversity and abundance using standardised protocols.
Financial management of the Saldanha Joint Monitoring Group, including all aspects of sampling including packaging, courier fees, lab costs, and invoicing, on behalf of various stakeholders in BSASA.
Financial management of SeaWise Food Safety, including budgeting and invoicing.
Attendance of industry meetings and liaison between industry, the NRCS, and the DFFE to develop action plans to ensure cost efficient and reasonable sampling procedures for food safety monitoring
