I am a marine ecologist with a strong international track record in high-impact research, leadership, and science communication. My work integrates field experimentation, quantitative ecology, image analysis, and a range of hands-on techniques to explore the ecology and biology of marine biological invasions — with a focus on impacts, vectors, and climate change. In 2013, I founded the Canning-Clode Marine Lab, based on Madeira Island, and I am the founder and Director of the Madeira Research Unit of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (mare-madeira.pt).
To date, I have authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Ecology & Evolution, Nature Sustainability, PLoS Biology, Communications Biology, and Diversity and Distributions. My Google Scholar profile shows over 7,772 citations, with an h-index of 41 and an i10-index of 99 (Accessed in June 2026), reflecting the sustained relevance and impact of my research. I have secured more than €8 million in funding through fellowships, research grants, awards, capacity-building initiatives, and private sponsorships.
My work has been featured in major international media outlets including CNN, BBC Four, Le Monde, The Washington Post, Sky News, and Forbes. I have presented at over 150 international conferences, with more than 50 invited talks and panels — including at the European Parliament, the United Nations Ocean Decade Conference, United Nations One Ocean Science Congress and the Monaco Blue Initiative.
In 2023, I was selected as an Edinburgh Ocean Leader, and in 2024 and 2025, I was recognized among Elsevier’s top 2% of scientists globally in terms of scientific impact, and in 2026, I was ranked among the world's top scientists in Ecology & Evolution by Research.com.
