João Canning-Clode is a Principal Investigator at the Regional Agency for the Development of Research Technology and Innovation (ARDITI), a non-profit organization which supports research and innovation, promotes scientific and technological training and contributes to the modernization and development of the Madeira Autonomous Region, Portugal. Currently, ARDITI hosts the Madeira pole of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, one of the largest R&D units nationwide, recently classified as Excellent R & D Unit by the Portuguese National Science Foundation (FCT). João is the Coordinator of the Madeira Research Unit of MARE at ARDITI, Madeira, and is the Principal Scientist and Scientific Coordinator of the MarineGEO NE Atlantic Madeira site.
João completed a Ph.D. degree in Biological Oceanography and Marine Sciences at the renowned GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany in 2008. From 2009 to 2011, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Marine Invasions Research Laboratory at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Maryland, USA, and at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama City, Panama. He has broad interests and formal training in marine biology and biodiversity, community ecology, marine biogeography and invasion biology and has focused his research primarily on marine benthic communities. João has published over 90 publications several of which are in high-impact scientific journals (e.g. Nature, Nature Ecology and Evolution, PLoS Biology, PLoS ONE, Diversity and Distributions, Science of Total Environment). In addition, João has been successfully participating in international projects and as a result he has secured over 2.5 million euros in relevant contributions in research grants and individual fellowships (e.g. Horizon 2020, INTERREG MAC, INTERREG Atlantic Area). His research group in Madeira is currently focused on investigating anthropogenic pressures in marine ecosystems and consists of 30 researchers including post docs, PhD students, technicians and interns. To date, his research has got media coverage in several countries.
