Activities
Having grown up in an environment surrounded by the sea, Filipe Alves has since developed a passion for the sea, followed by a natural desire to acquire knowledge and work towards conservation. Filipe Alves became marine biologist in 1998 at the University of Algarve (Portugal), where started his career. A Master in Ecology (in 2002 at the University of Coimbra, Portugal) and a PhD in Biological Sciences (in 2014, at the University of Madeira) strongly contributed to his training. Nowadays he develops a post-doctoral fellowship at the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE) / Madeira’s Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation (ARDITI). His interests include the marine ecology of insular environments (covering several taxa/habitats), with emphasis on the study of population ecology, ecophysiology, diet, and movement of large marine vertebrates, especially marine mammals. Filipe has collaborated with institutions/universities worldwide throughout 17 several research/conservation projects, being project manager or Co-PI since 2014. He publishes regularly in peer-reviewed/indexed journals, and has been reviewer for high-tier journals (e.g., Biological Reviews, Molecular Ecology, Scientific Data, Frontiers in Marine Science; see https://publons.com/author/1298164/filipe-m-a-alves#profile). Filipe has also participated in (>20) international conferences (coauthoring 45 posters and 20 oral communications), co-supervised 1 BSc, 9 MSc, 4 PhD, and 2 postdoctoral students/grants (between 2015-2021), and has lectured at the Universities of Algarve (1998-2001) and Madeira (2010-2020). Filipe has played as consultant (e.g., for ICES, Hab. Direct.), and recently, has been nominated by UN Member States of national experts to serve in the Pool of Experts of the Regular Process of the second World Ocean assessment.
