Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology
Activities
I am Marine Biologist with a Ph. D.
in Coastal Oceanography. I am currently a researcher associated to the Center
for Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research of the Caribbean (CIOH), in
Cartagena, Colombia, where I am in charge of implementing methodologies to
measure optical properties in-situ and ocean acidification.
My expertise focuses on understanding the interaction of living and non-living
particles with light in the ocean, with the aim of improving the interpretation
of ocean color from space. I worked with new remote sensing products such
as absorption coefficients to phytoplankton, detritus and Cromophoric Dissolved
Organic Matter (CDOM). In our team we are studying the biochemical effects of
CDOM and other chemical complexes (heavy metals) present in the water on pH and
alkalinity. I am also the Coordinator of the Cartagena’s station for
the Antares Latin-American Network that integrates in situ and remote sensing stations focused on detecting long-term
changes in marine ecosystems around the Americas.
Sea regions of study
Caribbean Sea
Gulf of California
