A. Miguel P. Santos is a researcher at IPMA-Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (the Portuguese Institute for Ocean and Atmosphere) and a member of the OC2-Oceanography and Climate Change Group of Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of the University of Algarve. He has a Degree in Marine Biology (5-years course with undergraduate thesis), a PhD in Geophysical Sciences-Physical Oceanography by the University of Lisboa, and more than 30 years of research experience on the relationships between the environment and marine organisms. Presently he is the Portuguese (National) Focal Point for IOC Argo Programme and one of the Coordinators of the “Agenda do Mar” (Sea Agenda) for the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation(FCT). He was IPMA's Representative in EuroGOOS, the President of the Scientific Council of IPMA from 2012 to 2017, the President of the Forum of State Laboratories Scientific Councils in 2015 and 2016, a member of the Portuguese IGBP/Global Change Committee (2005-2014) and GLOBEC National Representative (2005-2010). He has been
involved, as coordinator and PI, in more than 39 national and international projects (10
as a coordinator or PI). In the last years, his research has focused on the
physical-biological interactions in the ocean throughout an end-to-end
approach, on the impact of global change in the ocean and on the development of
ocean observing systems. This is reflected in >100 publications with >3575
citations and an h-index of 28 (Scholar). Other areas of interest are fisheries
oceanography, fish ecology, and RS applications to oceanography and fisheries.
