Since joining UCC in 2005, Kathrin has been working on research subjects of management and planning within the Coastal and Marine Governance group. Specific research interests within the  group include adaptation to climate change, Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and work involving the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), with focus on descriptors 10 and 11. Kathrin's recent work involves marine litter as WP lead of the FP7 funded Marine Litter in European Seas - Social Awareness and Co-Responsibility (MARLISCO - http://www.marlisco.eu/) and more specifically microplastics as WP lead in the Ecotoxicological effects of microplastics in marine ecosystems (EPHEMARE - http://www.jpi-oceans.eu/ecological-aspects-microplastics). Kathrin's work focuses on communication of science to diverse audiences such as the general public, Industry, NGO's and Policy and Decision makers.

Kathrin has extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, group facilitation, outreach and dissemination work, while addressing issues of coastal and marine governance through her contribution to several internationally funded projects such as AquaSpace (http://www.aquaspace-h2020.eu/), COEXIST (http://www.coexistproject.eu/), GEOSPECS (http://www.geospecs.eu/), KnowSeas (http://www.knowseas.com/), COREPOINT (http://corepoint.ucc.ie) and CoPraNet (http://www.coastalpractice.net).

Kathrin is involved in the Marine Irish Digital Atlas (MIDA - http://mida.ucc.ie/) project, which concerns the use of GIS technology and Open Source web-based mapping techniques and the supervision of GIS internships. The MIDA is part of the International Coastal Atlas Network (ICAN - http://ican.science.oregonstate.edu/home) and Kathrin is one of two co-chairs of this global network, which is a project of IODE of the IOC/UNESCO. Kathrin's specific research interest within the ICAN concerns end user requirements of a coastal web atlas (CWA).
