The Caribbean and its adjacent areas have been the source region for 11% of the world’s fatal tsunamis over history, with almost 100 tsunamis observed that have impacted 23 countries of this region. Through the establishment of a Tsunami Early Warning System in 2005, the Caribbean has significantly improved its capabilities to deal with tsunami danger. It continues however to be threatened by more frequent, but equally dangerous coastal hazards, as recently demonstrated by flooding and storm surges associated to Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (ICG/CARIBE-EWS) decided at its 12th session (May 2017) to establish a Group of Experts (GoE) to advise the ICG on the work and implementation plan required to enhance the warning system by including other coastal hazards. On this background a first session of the ICG/CARIBE-EWS Group of Experts (GoE) to develop and recommend to the ICG/CARIBE-EWS a strategy, actions and an implementation plan to enhance the warning system by including other coastal hazards will take place on 26-30 November 2018. Convenors: o Captain Alex Fernando FERRERO RONQUILLO (Colombia), Executive Secretary Colombian Ocean Commission o Dr Albert E. MARTIS (Curaçao), Director Meteorological Department Curacao o Sharlene DABREO (British Virgin Islands), Director Department of Disaster Management (DDM)
