The YouSea Institute (Zavod YouSea) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of marine biodiversity with a particular focus on the Slovenian sea. Founded in March 2021, based in Portorož, Slovenia, the Institute is composed of marine experts, researchers, educators and creators who share a strong commitment to protecting the marine environment and promoting sustainable use of marine resources. YouSea operates at the intersection of science, community engagement and sustainable development. Its mission is to increase understanding of marine ecosystems, promote responsible interaction with marine environments and create long-term solutions that enable the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. The Institute works to raise awareness about the importance of marine protection among both professionals and the wider public. One of the Institute’s flagship efforts is the Piran Sea Oasis (Morska oaza Piran), the first and only underwater structures of its kind in the Slovenian sea that support integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, field research and biodiversity restoration. Alongside this core project, YouSea develops educational programmes, art-based outreach, sustainable educational tourism and collaborative projects with the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The Institute aligns its work with EU strategies such as the Green Transition, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the Strategic Guidelines for Aquaculture 2030. The YouSea Institute acts as a dynamic and reliable partner for initiatives related to marine conservation, sustainable aquaculture, environmental education and the protection of marine ecosystems.
Innovation is at the heart of YouSea’s approach to marine biodiversity protection. The Institute combines scientific research, sustainable aquaculture, environmental stewardship and artistic expression to create new pathways for conserving the marine environment. The central innovative feature is the Piran Sea Oasis (Morska oaza Piran), an unique set of underwater structures of its kind in the Slovenian sea that promotes integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), ecosystem restoration and marine biodiversity monitoring. This model supports environmentally responsible marine farming and it also creates a living laboratory for studying species interactions. YouSea also innovates in the field of public engagement. Through the Blue School programme (Modra šola) the Institute transforms scientific knowledge into accessible experiences that encourage responsible behaviour and community participation, particularly with school kids. YouSea’s innovation lies in its holistic approach bridging scientific research, ocean literacy and creative communication to create impactful, future-oriented solutions for marine biodiversity conservation.
