Kevin Erwin is an ecosystem ecologist specializing in wetland and watershed evaluation, restoration and management. He has studied, designed, and implemented hundreds of wetland and watershed projects over the past four decades. Since 1980 he has served as the President and Principal Ecologist of Kevin L. Erwin Consulting Ecologist, Inc. in Ft. Myers, Florida. His recent work has focused on large-scale wetland restoration, watershed evaluation and management to improve the functional capacity of wetlands to implement source water protection and mitigate the impacts of climate change. A few of his current and recent projects for public agencies and NGOs include: an international wetland restoration and climate change project for Ramsar and IUCN; lead scientist on several mega-watershed projects including: the Density Reduction-Groundwater Resource study in southwest Florida; the evaluation and expert assistance related to phosphate mining impacts on the Peace River watershed; development of the Lehigh Headwaters Initiative, development of the Ontario (Canada) Headwaters Restoration Initiative; Watershed and well field analysis for the North Florida Water Management District; Canada; development and implementation of a Long Term Ecological Monitoring Plan for the Six Mile Cypress Slough and Watershed for the South Florida Water Management District, developing a comprehensive plan for the Setiu Wetland Catchment for the Malaysian government. His recent wetland restoration related activities include the design and permitting of Florida Gulf Coast University for the State of Florida Board of Regents, the design and restoration of two (public/private ) wetland mitigation banks, restoration of mangrove wetlands on Captiva Island destroyed by Hurricane Charley, and the coordination of ecological assessments and coastal wetland restoration efforts in thirteen nations following the Indian Ocean tsunami.
A few of his publications include: Wetlands and Global Climate Change: The Role of Wetland Restoration in a Changing World (Wetlands Ecology and Management-2009), Wetland Creation and Restoration-The Status of the Science for the US Environmental Protection Agency; Wetland Mitigation in the South Florida Water Management District for the South Florida Water Management District; Evaluation of Constructed Wetlands on Phosphate Mined Lands in Florida for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research; Wetland Restoration-Practical Guidelines for Successful Projects; Merging Management and Science-The Lee County Florida Coastal Planning Process.
He has organized numerous international symposia on wetlands such as: Wetland Creation and Restoration, Global Wetlands Old World and New at Intecol, Ohio State University(1992); Wetland Restoration for the New Millennium at the Millennium Wetlands Conference in Quebec (2000); Temperate Wetland Restoration in a Southern Ontario Watershed Context at the A.D. Latornell Conservation Symposium, Alliston (2007); Achieving Carbon Offsets through Mangroves and other Wetlands, Ramsar Convention, Gland (2009); In 1996 he developed and continues to instruct a Water Management and Wetland Restoration Training Course for Guelph University and a consortium of Canadian agencies. Since 2008 he has conducted workshops in Korea, France, Switzerland, Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Seychelles, Senegal, Luxembourg, Vietnam and the USA.
Kevin is certified (1985) by the Ecological Society of America as a Senior Ecologist and by the Society of Wetland Scientists as a Professional Wetland Scientist. Kevin is a guest faculty member of Florida Gulf Coast University’s College of Arts and Sciences. He is also a member of the Ramsar Scientific & Technical Review Panel filling the thematic expert post on wetland restoration and management, a member of Wetland International’s Supervisory Council, the coordinator of Wetlands International’s Wetland Restoration Specialist Group, and a member of the Southwest Florida Community Foundation Board.
