I use experimental approaches to understand the effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers on phytoplankton dynamics, in estuaries and coastal lagoons. My specific research interests are:
-harmful algal blooms
-eutrophication
-phytoplankton as ecological indicator
-methodological issues in experimental phytoplankton ecology
I am also interested on the psychological dimensions of environmental issues, particularly:
-psychological responses to coastal hazards
-place attachment and risk perception in coastal communities
-psychology of citizen science

Identification and enumeration of marine and freshwater phytoplankton using epifluorescence and inverted microscopy.
Enumeration of bacteiroplankton using epifluorescence microscopy.

I like to call myself an experimental phytoplankton ecologist; the majority of my work has been focused on phytoplankton ecology in coastal ecosystems, particularly the effects of anthropogenic stressors and climate change-related variables, and the use of phytoplankton as an ecological indicator in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. I am a marine biologist and completed M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in marine ecology, a post-doc in microbial ecology and another post-doc in coastal management/environmental psychology. Currently, I hold an assistant researcher position with research and teaching duties.
Eclectic and curious by nature, I recently finished a B.Sc. degree in Psychology and M.Sc. in Clinical and Health Psychology, which allowed me to expand my research to the realm of environmental psychology. I am currently finishing a PhD in Environmental Psychology, studying place attachment and risk perception of coastal hazards.
