My main field of specialization concerns wave and circulation phenomena in the sea, mainly the physics of surface gravity waves generation, deep water waves propagation, coastal transformations, nearshore processes, surf zone hydrodynamics, wave induced currents and wave-current interactions, (modeling, mathematical theory, simulations with numerical wave and circulation models: SWAN, STWAVE, WW3, WAM, REF/DIF, SHORECIRC, NSSM, POM), uncertainties in waves and currents modelling, deep sea and coastal hazards. Another issue of special interest is related to renewable energy in the marine environment and especially with wave energy.
As regards my practical experience besides the work at the NATO Undersea Research Centre I was responsible with the operational forecast in two major situations in the year 2002:
- The NATO exercise ‘Unified Odyssey’, January-February;
- The accident of M/V Prestige, November-December.
During my work I had also the opportunity to analyze important data sets coming from various in situ or remotely sensed devices, so I am very well aware with most of the developments in this direction.
I have a very good theoretical background in the field of numerical and mathematical modelling of fluid mechanics in general and of ocean waves and currents in special. This is supported by the fact that in my University (University “Dunarea de Jos” of Galati, Romania) I am giving classes in the field of ‘Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics’ while at Technical University of Lisbon I teach Modelling Sea Waves and Coastal Processes at master degree level

Skills
Assessments related to the exctraction of the renewable energy in the marine environment. This include mainly:
- identification of the hot energy spots,
- efficiency assessments for various WEC devices,
- evaluations of the impact on the shoreline dynamics of the renewable energy extraction in the coastal environment.
Considerable expertise in working with wave and circulation models (SWAN, WAM, WW3, STWAVE, REFDIF, FUNWAVE, POM, SHORECIRC and SURF).
Experience in analysis and interpretation of ocean data comming from various in situ or remotely sensed devices
Experience in providing the environmental support associated with situations of crises (the M/V Prestige accident) or naval exercises (Unified Odyssey, Swordfish), or also environmental suport for harbor operations.
High theoretical background in Modelling Ocean Waves (mathematical and numerical modelling, Philips Miles mechanism for wave generation, deep water wave propagation and finite depths effects);
Good theoretical background in numerical methods in Fluid Mechanics and Physics;
Extremely advanced in using MATLAB for data processing and visualisations especially associated with the implementation and evaluation of the wave and circulation numerical models
