Summary | During its Fourth Session the IODE Group of Experts on Marine Information Management reviewed the actions completed during the past intersessional period. Of the sixteen actions planned, twelve were completed. During this year's session the Group focussed its discussions and intersessional action plan on (i) development of a directory of MIM training opportunities; (ii) options for developing countries to obtain scientific literature; (iii) electronic document delivery technologies; (iv) electronic communication over the INTERNET and other services; (v) development of a catalogue and full-text CD-ROM of IOC publications; (vi) development of MIM Publications Series; (vii) revitalization of the MEDI catalogue; (viii) standard structure for bibliographic and directory databases; (ix) closer cooperation with the ASFA Board to develop Micro CDS/ISIS user interfaces; (x) development of an International Directory of Marine Science Libraries and Information Centres; (xi) development of a Global Directory of Marine Science Institutions and Scientists; (xii) incorporation of marine information in the GTSPP CD-ROM. The Group also discussed the relevance of MIM within the framework of UNCED. The Group stressed the need for UN agencies to increase its cooperation in the field of Marine Information Management and MIM capacity building in developing countries. |
